When you click on one of the links above, you will be prompted to select a directory to save the file in. Select a temp directory on your hard drive, and click OK. Once the file has been downloaded, run ver102.exe and follow the instructions to extract the installation files. After all of the files have been extracted to your hard drive, follow the instructions below: Run SETUP.EXE by double clicking on the file name in Windows* Explorer SETUP.EXE will launch InstallShield* which will lead you through the installation process When prompted, accept the software license agreement Select a destination directory and program folder for the processor serial number control utility Installation Notes Windows 95 and Windows 98: You may choose to execute the utility from the installation. If you choose not to execute the utility during the installation, the processor serial number will remain enabled until either: The utility is run from the Start Program menu or, The utility is automatically invoked when the processor is reset (typically a restart or power off/on - check with your PC manufacturer for model dependent details) Windows* NT: You must have administrator permissions to complete the installation You will need to reboot the system for the installation to complete Running the utility When executed for the first time, the utility's default behavior is to disable the processor serial number and to display an icon in the Windows task tray. The user may choose to hide the task tray icon, using the "Settings" menu item. Clicking the icon in the task tray displays a menu of possible user actions. The utility is run every time Windows starts, even if the user has selected to hide the task tray icon. While running in the background, the utility polls the state of the processor number every 15 seconds. If during a poll, the state is found to have changed from disabled to enabled, the utility will disable the processor serial number (this may occur when resuming from a hibernation state). If the poll detects that an application has disabled the processor serial number feature, then the icon will show that the feature has been disabled, and will change the default utility state to "disabled." The task tray icon changes to reflect the actual state of the processor serial number. Multiprocessor system compatibility The utility works the same way on multiprocessor systems as it does on single processor systems. The multiprocessor support is performed at the application level in Windows NT. The control utility creates a thread for each processor in the system and sets the thread's processor affinity so that one thread executes on each of the processors in the system. When the user causes the "Status" dialog to be displayed, all processor serial numbers are read and returned to the user. The dialog displaying the processor serial number changes the uni-processor system single line display to a multi-line drop-down box which contains all the serial numbers for the system. The utility displays the serial number for processor 0 by default. The user may click the drop-down box tab to see all the processor serial numbers. When the user disables the processor serial number, the control utility disables the processor serial number for all the processors at the same time. The utility supports the same maximum number of processors as Windows NT does, and supports both Pentium® III processor and Pentium III Xeon™ processor-based systems.
