CAUSE ===== This behavior can occur for any of the following reasons: - The Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) settings may be incorrect. - TCP/IP may be improperly bound to the Dial-Up Adapter. - The modem signal may be too low for the remote server to detect. RESOLUTION ========== To resolve this issue, remove and restore Dial-up Neworking, Dial-up Adapters, and TCP/IP components. 1. To remove and restore Dial-up Neworking ------------------------------------------ 1. Double-click My Computer and click Dial-Up Networking. 2. Right-click an MSN connection, and then click Delete. Repeat this step until all MSN connections are deleted. 3. Close the Dial-Up Networking window. 4. Click Start, point to Find, and then click "Files or Folders". 5. In the Named box, type pppmac.vxd, and then click Find Now. 6. In the list of found files, right-click the Pppmac.vxd file, click Rename, and then rename pppmac.vxd to pppmac.old in its place. 7. Repeat steps 5-6 to rename the following files: - Splitter.vxd - Vdhcp.386 - Vip.386 - Vnbt.386 - Vtcp.386 - Wsock.vxd - Winsock.dll 8. Close the Find: Files Named window. 9. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel and then double-click Add/Remove Programs. 10. On the Windows Setup tab, click Communications, and then click Details. 11. Clear Dial-Up Networking and click OK until you return to Control Panel. 12. If LANtastic or Banyan VINES networking components are installed on your computer, refer to your network administrator for instructions about how to remove these components. 13. Close Control Panel, and then restart the computer. If the above steps do not correct the situation, proceed to the steps below. 2. To remove and restore Dial-up Adapters and TCP/IP components --------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network. 2. If TCP/IP is installed (If TCP/IP is not installed, proceed to step 4.), for each installed TCP/IP component, click TCP/IP, click Properties and write down the properties of each TCP/IP setting, and then click OK. 3. Click TCP/IP again, and then click Remove, repeating this step until all TCP/IP components are removed. 4. Click each Dial-Up Adapter component, click Remove, and then click OK. If you are prompted to restart the computer, click No. 5. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network. 6. Click the Configuration tab and click Add. 7. In the Select Network Component Type dialog box, click Adapter, and then click Add. 8. In the Manufacturers box, click Microsoft. 9. In the Network Adapters box, click Dial-Up Adapter, and then click OK. 10. In the Select Network Component Type dialog box, click Protocol, and then click Add. 11. In the Manufacturers box, click Microsoft. 12. In the Network Adapters box, click TCP/IP, and then click OK. 13. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes. NOTE: If you are using Banyan VINES, make sure you are using the most recent drivers. Older drivers for Banyan VINES are not compatible with other network protocols. If necessary, refer to your network administrator for instructions about how to add the LANtastic or Banyan VINES networking components to your computer. To resolve this issue, follow these steps: 1. In the Control Panel, double-click Modems, click your modem, and then click Properties. 2. Move the Speaker Volume slider to High, click OK, and then click Close. If the issue still remains unresolved, check your modem settings to make sure your modem is properly configured to connect to MSN.
