The NetShow tools installation places several .asf-creation tools on your computer: the ASF Real-Time Encoder, the ASF Editor, VidToAsf, WavToAsf, and ASFChop. The ASF Real-Time Encoder and the ASF Editor appear in the Microsoft NetShow program group on the Start menu. The command line utilities VidToAsf, WavToAsf, and ASFChop are installed in the Windows directory.
The following list briefly describes the Microsoft NetShow tools. Use the links to jump to additional information about the tool.
- ASF Editor. Provides a graphical interface for combining and synchronizing audio and image files. The ASF Editor can display a simulation of what your .asf file will look like before you actually create it. The ASF Editor also helps you create .asf files for restricted network bandwidth and allows you to add error correction. With the ASF Editor you can include URLs and other types of script commands in the .asf file.
- VidToAsf. A command-line utility that converts .avi or .mov files into .asf files. Using a command-line option, you can also specify script files that will add markers, invoke URLs, and execute script commands. For more information, see the section VidToAsf and WavToAsf Command-Line Options later in this chapter.
- WavToAsf. A command-line utility that converts .wav files into .asf files. Using a command-line option, you can also specify script files that will add markers, invoke URLs, and execute script commands. For more information, see the VidToAsf and WavToAsf Command-Line Options section.
- Publish to ASF. A PowerPoint add-on tool (shipped with Office 97) that saves PowerPoint slides as .jpg images. Then, using the Narration tool in PowerPoint, you can create an audio file and synchronize the images to it. You can then save the audio and images as an .asf file.
- NetShow Presenter. A PowerPoint add-on tool (for use with the version of PowerPoint shipped with Office 97) that, along with the Real-Time Encoder, helps you turn a PowerPoint presentation into an ASF stream.
- ASF Real-Time Encoder. The Real-Time Encoder turns any live source (such as output from a microphone or a video camera) into an ASF stream or .asf file. The Real-Time Encoder can also be used to convert an .avi or .wav file to an .asf file.
- ASFChop. ASFChop is an .asf file editing tool. You can use ASFChop to edit any .asf file; however, you will probably use ASFChop to edit files created with the ASF Real-Time Encoder. Use ASFChop to delete chunks of time from an .asf file.
