Document: FPNW 4.0 patch to support Client32 compatible redirectors Date: October 11, 1996 Note: This patch will be superceded by the next available service pack for Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 (SP2) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Please Read Section 3.0 for Installation instructions ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.0 Introduction This enhancement, when applied to File and Print Services for NetWare (FPNW) 4.0 running on Windows NT Server 4.0, permits Client32 compatible redirectors to see and use services from your Windows NT Server computer. This patch should NOT be applied to the 3.51 version of FPNW. 2.0 Self Extracting Cabinet file The Client32 patch for FPNW 4.0 is available for all 4 NT platforms: -- FPNW_C32_x86.EXE - Cabinet for the Intel platform -- FPNW_C32_ALP.EXE - Cabinet for the Alpha platform -- FPNW_C32_MIP.EXE - Cabinet for the MIPS platform -- FPNW_C32_PPC.EXE - Cabinet for the Power PC platform Depending on which platform you downloaded for, the cabinet file contains one of the following files: -- FPNWSRV.x86 - patch for FPNW 4.0 on the Intel platform -- FPNWSRV.ALP - patch for FPNW 4.0 on the Alpha platform -- FPNWSRV.MIP - patch for FPNW 4.0 on the MIPS platform -- FPNWSRV.PPC - patch for FPNW 4.0 on the PPC platform Also included in each cabinet file are: -- FPNW_C32.TXT - Release Notes (this file) -- SHAREBIT.EXE - Utility to set the share bit. 3.0 Installation To install the patch, perform the following: 1. If you haven't done so already, execute the self extracting Cabinet file (for example, for the Intel processor, you would run: FPNW_C32_x86.EXE). This Cabinet file will copy the following files to your \%SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers directory: FPNWSRV.xxx (where xxx=platform (x86, MIP, ALP, PPC)) FPNW_C32.TXT SHAREBIT.EXE Once extracted, change to the \%SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers directory and verify that these files were successfully copied. 2. Stop the FPNW service by using Control Panel Services or by typing NET STOP FPNW at a command prompt. 3. From \%SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers, rename the old FPNWSRV.SYS file to FPNWSRV.OLD -- EXAMPLE: Rename FPNWSRV.SYS FPNWSRV.OLD 4. From \%SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers, copy the file appropriate to your platform to be FPNWSRV.SYS -- Example: COPY FPNWSRV.X86 FPNWSRV.SYS 5. Restart the FPNW service -- EXAMPLE: NET START FPNW 6. You may optionally copy SHAREBIT.EXE to your \Sysvol\public directory. 4.0 Supercedes earlier Knowledge Base article. This enhancement addresses KB article Q151989 entitled "Novell 32-bit Client for Win95/WinNT Doesn't See FPNW Volume" This KB article also discusses a workaround whereby disabling LIP and BURST permits Client32 to fallback to 16 bit client functionality. If you have previously disabled LIP and BURST, it is strongly recommended you consider re-enabling them after you have applied this fixed. To re-enable LIP and BURST: 1. Stop the FPNW service using Control Panel Services or by typing NET STOP FPNW at a command prompt. 2. Run Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe). 3. From the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE subtree, go to the following key: \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\FPNW\Parameters 4. On the Edit menu, choose Add Value. 5. Ensure the EnableBurst value is set to 1 (original default). 6. Ensure the EnableLip value is set to 1 (original default). 7. If present, ensure the EnableOS2NameSpace value is set to 1. 8. Shut down RegEdt32 and restart FPNW (NET START FPNW) 5.0 Usage Notes For this release, the following issues are known. Based on customer feedback, Microsoft will evaluate addressing these issues in future releases: * Neither Windows 95 nor Windows NT Workstation users can use the Explorer to set rights on the root of an FPNW volume. Instead, use third-party tools to set the rights. Rights to directories and files can still be set. * On Windows NT Workstation clients, the provided command-line utilities (such as map, attach, capture, and setpass) do not work properly. Use the GUI Windows interface instead. Example, to change your password, use . * Users who try to log on from Windows 95 clients using disabled user accounts will keep returning to the login dialog after each login attempt. These users must click Cancel to exit the login sequence. * Windows NT Workstation users cannot view the security properties of FPNW printers. Instead, you should assign security properties locally at the server. * On Windows NT Workstation, "# command /c" is not recognized in login scripts. Use "# cmd /c" instead. * On MS-DOS and Windows 95 clients using Client32, options of the CAPTURE command are not cleared automatically when a new user logs on to the client. The new user will get the old user's CAPTURE settings, unless the new user uses the ENDCAP command. * On both Windows NT Workstation and Windows 95 clients using Client32, the Shareable flag is always displayed as checked. Please use SHAREBIT.EXE to set and verify the status of the Sharebit. 6.0 Disclaimers and Legal Notices This patch is an early release of client32 compatibility for FPNW 4.0. The official release will accompany Service Pack 2 for NT 4.0.
