Episode 1 - Ultimate

(Part One)

Amy: Jeez, everyone just reminds this guy of Maria, huh?
Everyone else: *stares at Amy*
Amy: Oh. Whoops.

This is a shout out to Sonic Adventure 2, in which Amy convinces Shadow to work with everyone in saving the planet.

Sonia: Hey, Shadow must have taken some tips from Shyloh and did a girly swoon!

This is only obscure if you jumped to this fic and didn't read "Meet Shyloh", the Egg Spiral's first riffed fic. Sonia's shout out is to one of her brother's older riffs in which Shyloh faints upon seeing Shadow.

Amy: Perfect Chaos: Part Two.

Shout out to the first Sonic Adventure, in which Chaos actually destroys a good chunk of Station Square.

Amy: *grabs Sonic's arm* Wait, guys! Did you forget that the bridge has no oxygen?
Sonic: And when has that stopped me before?

Sonic's actually making a crack... at his own set of video games. The blue blur can breathe in space. He can also breathe in volcanoes... yet, he always drowns in water, mainly because the guy can't swim.

Amy: Plot device. Really, you should just relax.

Amy's referring to the theme song to "Mystery Science Theater 3000".

Sonic: Shadow, be careful. That... thing's been taking tips from the Mishima family.
Kyo: So, it can withstand ravines, volcanoes, and explosions from boatloads of robots?
Sonic: Exactly.

Sonic's referring to the "Tekken" series... in which the Mishima clan... yes, actually withstood those things.

Sonia: This is worse than bringing legendaries to a Pokémon battle and winning tournaments without a hitch.

While this does happen over actual battles, Sonia's referring to the anime, in which a trainer actually won the Sinnoh league with legendaries. Of course, a good chunk of the anime's fans were not happy.

Amy: *sarcastically* All's well that ends well, right?

Amy's making a jab at the end of Sonic Adventure, in which Tails actually says this line.

(Part Two)

Kyo: *as Gerald* Including the memories of the unlucky souls that have watched "Perfect Couples"!

Obscure if you've never watched TV between January and April of 2011. In my opinion, this show was terrible... probably because it featured three bland and unfunny Wonder Bread couples.

Amy: Good! Then your training partner will be... Akuma! No, Shin Akuma! No... it's actually Oni!
Sonia: Also, if you're going to train against Evil Ryu... don't aim for the chest, because there's a hole in it. You'll whiff, and you'll look stupid.

These characters all hail from "Street Fighter". Shin Akuma is basically Akuma's true form. Oni may be too, but nobody is sure yet. Evil Ryu is obviously the evil version of Ryu. Yes, his recent incarnation actually has a hole in his chest. Don't ask.

Sonic: Also, you must open your heart.

Yes, Sonic is referring to the main theme for "Sonic Adventure" entitled "Open Your Heart".

(Part Three)

Amy: Of Christmas?
Sonic, Sonia, Manic: ...
Jessie: Congratulations, Amy. You now know how I felt that day.

This is actually a shout out to the riffs of the Black Crow's third episode, in which Cassy questions Jessie about Christmas... if that's okay.

Jessie: *yelling* I can accept the fact that I actually want to rip your bloody heart out with my bare hands and eat it raw!

That "eat it raw" part is a reference to a very unknown bloody fighting game called "Bloodstorm".

Sonia: I guess I don't have to hire Kano for you, then...

Sonia's referring to the character Kano's first fatality from the original "Mortal Kombat", in which he rips the beating heart out of his opponent... without the eating part, as Jessie desired.

Kyo: *as Kusanagi* What have I told you about fighting with your anger...?

Obscure if you haven't read my crappy fanfiction. It seems that Kyo's been poking around and read "Kusanagi's Wrath" for a good laugh.

(Part Four)

All: *singing* It doesn't matter now what happens, I will never give up the fight...!

Those are song lyrics to Sonic's "Sonic Adventure" theme, "It Doesn't Matter".

Kyo: And then training montages with his mother were shown.
Sonic: Shadow... The People's Choice!

Sonic and Kyo are referencing the live-action "Tekken" film. By the way, Jin is the People's Choice. And every time he's close to getting his butt kicked, he remembers training with his mother, and then he magically wins the battle. Keep that in mind.

Episode 2 - Brewdening Love

(Part One)

Jessie: Is it a book of the Bible, a rock band, or the game console? You make the call!

Since some people believe that the X-Box was the first console ever (I'm dead serious), this somehow counts for obscurity. The "game console" that Jessie's referring to is the Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive, for those who don't live in North America).

Sonia: Oh, dear heavens! I need a "My Immortal" to English dictionary here!

Self-explanatory, Sonia's comparing the grammar to what is found in "My Immortal".

I watched as Edwood
Amy: ...dressed in women's clothing again.

Reference to the late director, Ed Wood.

Sonic: Maybe today's lunch sucked beans.
Sonia: Hey, if you can get sick from eating a ham and cheese sandwich, you'd question your school's lunch program, too.

This actually happened to me... more than once. I'm not kidding. Then again, that's what happened when you attended Detroit Public Schools back then.

Cassy: And wait until he takes his shirt off! There's so much hair that you'd have to take a weed whacker to his chest!

Cassy's making a reference to the "Twilight: New Moon" film. Of course, she's exaggerating on the body hair.

Sonic: Look, I'll treat you to a shopping spree at Hot Topic if you can just calm down.

Does Sonic believe that Erin is Tara, the writer of "My Immortal", who claims to shop at Hot Topic every day? Sources say "yes".

Sonic: *shrugs* I guess it's better than... Sakura Hikari.

Call back to the Egg Spiral's very first short in their sixth episode, "Deep in my heart".

Amy: Tyler returns to finish the job!

Amy: ...Tyler completes his mission!
Sonia: Score!

(The second riff is in Part Nine.) Amy's making a reference to the first "Twilight" book, in which Bella was nearly run over by a van driven by Tyler.

Sonia: I guess He can hold off on smiting Harold Camping now.

Harold Camping once set this date, May 21, 2011, for the "rapture". Obviously, it didn't happen, and he then set the date to five months later (October). Ironically, the guy suffered a stroke after the May "rapture".

(Part Two)

Kyo: Now please go the fuck to sleep.

Reference to the "children's" book, "Go The Fuck to Sleep".

Cassy: Well, I dreamt that there was a flesh eating virus on the left side of my face last night.
Amy, Miyu: *shudders*
Kyo: That's a weird dream, Two-Face.

Two-Face is a Batman villain, who has the left side of his face scarred from an acid attack.

Miyu: Maybe he's sad because the country decided to split into northern and southern factions.

Miyu's referring to the event in which South Sudan became a country. (On July 9, 2011)

Manic: "Vampir"? Is that a Cardian?

Manic's referring to an episode of the "Sailor Moon" anime, specifically the second series, "R", in which there was a Cardian with that exact name.

Miyu: See you next game, guys!

"See You Next Game" refers to a picture found in Sonic CD, in which Tails is in the picture. Chronologically (by game release dates), the next Sonic console game after CD is Sonic 3.

Sonic: *as Edward* Yeah, we can. I'll just need to borrow a neuralizer first.

A neuralizer is a rather popular device from the "Men In Black" films. It's used to erase certain events of a person's memory and the person who uses it then fills the affected person's "blank spots" with false memories or events.

(Part Three)

Sonic: Oh, great! Primavera's the narrator now!

Call back to... effin' "Saranghamnida", yo.

Jessie: Rosemary. The lobotomized sister of Rosalie.

This comment from Jessie isn't meant to be a joke at all; it's only obscure if you know nothing about the Kennedy clan. Rosemary actually had a lobotomy at 23... which left her mentally incapacitated for the rest of her life.

The parents were out hunting for dear
Miyu: ...John.

This is one of the few riffs that actually needs the actual part from the story to fully understand it. Anyway, Miyu's referring to a "Dear John" letter, in which one is written to end a relationship.

Sonic: That's okay, I had a Nightgeese once.

Sonic's referring to "Nightmare Geese" from the Fatal Fury/King of Fighters series.

(Part Four)

Manic: This is Clippy! It looks like you're trying to write to "flamers"! May I suggest even stronger language?

Oh, you should know who Clippy is, even if you don't own a Windows based computer. If not, then I'll be blunt: Clippy pops up when you're attempting to write something, like a letter.

Jessie: Shut up, you klepto!

Obscure if you know nothing about Manic's original series, "Sonic Underground". The green hedgehog is a kleptomaniac (in other words, he steals on a consistent basis, but not from his siblings, and it counts as one of his "likes"). It's so insane, that one of his dislikes involves "putting back things that he's stolen".

Manic: Yes, I have met the Fockers. They're crazy people.

Reference to the movies "Meet the Parents", "Meet the Fockers", and "Little Fockers".

Manic: *as Edward* Yes, I did it for the money! Now I know how Pattinson feels!

Reference to the "Twilight" films, in which Robert Pattinson clearly admits that he hated his character, and that Stephenie Meyer's, well... "crazy".

Manic: *as Natalie Burke* This is absolutely fascinating.

Manic: Hey, Natalie? You may need to practice your pronunciation skills again.

Both of these riffs are in reference to the Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode, "Werewolf". One of the main things that Mike and the 'Bots made fun of was, yes, Natalie's bad acting and pronunciation.

(Part Five)

Miyu: The audience wanted to know where that jaguar came from. Should I call Hercule Poirot, Nancy Drew, or Encyclopedia Brown for this case?
Sonia: The third one, because we'll save a fortune in hiring him.

The three people that Miyu mentioned are all fictional detectives.

Miyu: Somebody set up us the bomb, Jacob's behind.

Reference to the badly translated opening of "Zero Wing".

Miyu: Ah, and there's our Tanya.

Miyu is referencing a few winposes from Ryu of "Street Fighter" fame, where he does have a random wind blow at his gi.

Sonic: Bob Goen?

This man was best known for hosting "Entertainment Tonight".

Yet another "White Hedgehog" jab. Yes, Sonic still hates her.

The siblings are making a shout out to the fifth season of "Hell's Kitchen", where J (who oddly spoke in the third person) accidentally left a lettuce butt in one of the salads.

Sonic is referencing the Red and Blue versions of "Pokemon Mystery Dungeon".

(Part Seven)

Cassy: *as Edward* At least until this movie is made and bombs like "Waterworld".

Almost self explanatory; "Waterworld" was known as one of the infamous Box Office Bombs.

Jessie: If Usain Bolt can't run to Canada that fast, then neither can he. Stop trying to convince me.

Usain Bolt is a Jamaican Track and Field star.

Another reference to "My Immortal".

Call back to the Black Crow's second riffed fic, in which Rini weighed... fifteen pounds. I kid you not.

Jessie: Just One Lip.
Amy: Just One Fox.

Reference to the FOX Network's old slogan.

Cassy: Uh-oh! Akuma has Joan's number!
Amy: Huh?
Cassy: Oh, I'll explain later, dude.

(Part Ten)

Kyo: Oh, hey! Looks like I'm "goffic" enough to be a "sinnar" like Cassy!

Yet another "My Immortal" jab.

The answer to this riddle? "Slap!" It's yet another reference to the Rick James skit.

Kyo's referring to the former mayor of Detroit.

Me anD ward and Al and Jacob and Jenny and Becca and Rosse and Em
Kyo: ...and Zoidberg.

Reference to a line from "Futurama", in which Bender says, "Save my friends! And Zoidberg!"

Kyo: Nothing's worse than the main ingredient in McDonald's hamburgers.
Cassy: It's made of people!

Kyo's cracking on a few fast food ads where the basic message stated that "Our secret ingredient is people!" Cassy's referring to the film "Soylent Green".

(Part Eleven)

Sonia: Yes, I certainly envy you because you're typing like a two year old with a terrible nicotine habit.

Sonia's referring to the infamous "Indonesian Smoking Baby". Don't worry, he's long kicked the habit, thank goodness.

Sonia: I think she needs to do a bad food porn show with Kathryn.
Manic: *shudders* Man, Kat couldn't do that right! Er -- Joan's going to make it even worse!

It's another "White Hedgehog" call back.

Sonia: Well... at least it was a little better than Serenity's take on it.

Call back to "Defying Destiny".

Sonia: Look, no human's really going to find anything erotic about animals... unless you're Princess Elise.

Sonia's making a jab at "Sonic '06".

(Part Twelve)

Sonia: *as Erin/Joan* And then my thoughts molded over.

One of the least scathing call backs to "The White Hedgehog".

Manic: Okay... care to finish that sentence, Miss "Hell's Kitchen" editor?

Manic is referring to the shoddy cliffhangers in the U.S. version of "Hell's Kitchen". Sometimes, an episode will end with "To Be Continued", only to find out that the cliffhanger is a complete waste of time in the very next episode.
 

All: *as Jay Sherman* It stinks!

Reference to "The Critic".

Sonic: Jeez, this girl has pulled one massive Kathryn on our butts!

Yes, Sonic's now invented a slang term for this series. "Pulling a Kathryn" refers to a character's random mood swings. In other words, he or she will act nasty during one second, goes weepy the next (or vice versa), and it continues in an endless cycle.

If this happens repeatedly, it will reach the point where none of the riffers will show sympathy towards the character in question when the time is supposed to come in the story, and they will refuse to hold their punches on him or her... just like the Egg Spiral members demonstrated at one certain point.

This will be the only time that "Pulling a Kathryn" will be mentioned in the Obscure References page.

Kyo: Yeah, man. I mean, your track record's worse than that Nina woman.

Kyo's referring to Nina Williams of the "Tekken" series.
