This page lists updates to the Test documentation for HCT versions 9.0, 9.1 and 9.5.
Microsoft Windows Logo Hardware Compatibility Test Kit Version 9.5 Released
The HCT 9.5 kit includes test suites for the WHQL device programs. The modem and audio test suites have new preview tests. To run the modem, audio, network or storage tests, follow these instructions during installation of this Preview Pack:
- Run the HCT 9.5 (see Getting Started).
- When the "Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Tests" dialog appears, select "System, Server, NIC, Storage, Audio, Modem Tests". The Tester Type Dialog will appear.
- Select the type of hardware you are testing for this submission in the Tester Type dialog. For modem testing, select the "Modem Device Certification" option that lists the bus type of the modem you want to test. For netowork testing, select the "Network Interface Card" option.
- After selecting the appropriate option from the Tester Type dialog, click "Continue" to complete installation of Test Manager, or "Exit" to exit Test Manager Setup.
To run the other WHQL device Test Kits, follow these instructions after installing this HCT:
- Run the HCT 9.5 (see Getting Started).
- When the "Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Tests" dialog appears, select "Other Device Kits".
- The "Devkits" directory window opens. This directory contains a directory for each WHQL device program.
- Open the appropriate directory to install the device test tools.
HCT 9.5 includes three new tests for Systems testing: the Driver Verifier, PCI Latency, and ACPI System tests. To run these tests, follow the instructions on this page.

- Preparing a System for Testing: This document has been updated with the following information:
- Changes to "Step 5: Set Video Card to Maximum Resolution"
- Preview of a requirement to set up systems with a FAT32 partition.
October 1, 1999
The following updates were made to the HCT documents on 10/1/1999:
- HCT Testing Errata: Item 79 is new, and provides important information on ACPI testing on systems with large amounts of physical memory. Item 80 is new, and notes issues with the Return Results feature of Test Manager.
- System Submission Procedures: The system submission procedures have been edited for better organization.
- PCI 2.1 Cards Test: This test description has been edited, removing a request to send log files to whqlsys@microsoft.com.

- HCT Testing Errata: The following changes were made to the HCT testing errata on 9/28/1999:
- Errata Item # 23 now applies to PC 99 system submissions and PC 98 refreshes.
- Errata Items # 75, # 76, # 77 and # 78 are all new.
- System Testing Announcements: There is a new announcement stating that Effective September 1, 1999, initial (non-refresh) PC 98 system submissions are no longer accepted.
September 22, 1999: Changes for the HCT 9.2 Beta 2 and HCT 9.3 Beta 2
Web Updates
To download the HCT 9.2 Beta 2 Web Update and HCT 9.3 Beta 2 Web Update, go to the WHQL Test Kits page. You must first install the HCT 9.0 CD to use the web updates. These web updates contain fixes to many WHQL tests, as well as several new preview tests. Preview Tests are not required at this time, but will become requirements in the future.
To test with the HCT 9.2 Beta 2 Web Update, you must download Windows 2000 Release Candidate 2 (RC2).
These web updates do not include updated documentation. For the latest HCT documentation, including information on new preview video tests and Pre-OS tests, please see HCT documentation on the web at http://www.microsoft.com/hwtest/sysdocs/.

- HCT Testing Errata: The HCT testing errata has been re-designed to provide better organization and navigation. In the process of this re-design, several errata items were combined, specifically:
- Items # 67 & # 15 were combined into item # 15.
- Items # 65 & # 44 were combined into item # 44.
- Items # 64 & # 20 were combined into item # 20.
- Items # 63 & # 21 were combined into item # 21.
- Items # 62 & # 23 were combined into item # 23.
- Items # 57 & # 1 were combined into item # 1.
- System Submission Procedures & System Testing Announcements: These pages have been updated to include new processors that are eligible for self-test. For specifics, see System Testing Announcements.
August 10, 1999
The following updates were made to the HCT documents on 8/10/1999:
- System Submission Procedures: The System Submission Procedures have been updated to correct the following error: It was previously stated that SDG 2.0 Server submissions can contain PC 97 devices. In fact, SDG 2.0 Server Submissions can only contain components that are designated as PC 98, PC 99, SDG 1.0 or SDG 2.0 devices on the HCL.
July 23, 1999
The following updates were made to the HCT documents on 7/23/1999:
- HCT Testing Errata: Item number 2 (Softenum) has been removed because the information that it contains is better described in errata item number 1. Item number 41 has been revised with additional links. Item 59 is new.
The PC 98 and PC 99 testing errata have been merged. All PC 98 errata can now be found on the lower half of the testing errata, in rows that start with "All", "8.0" or "8.1". Errata items 60 - 68 have been moved from the PC 98 errata to the new errata, which appears in both the PC 99 HCT Documentation and PC98 HCT Documentation.
- Server Test: The Issues section of this test description has been removed because it contained misleading information. Failures of the Server Test will be handled by WHQL on a case by case basis.
- Cluster Server Submission Procedures: The submission procedures for clusters have been revised to include references to Submission Assistant. All cluster submissions must be made with Submission Assistant.

Web Updates
The HCT 9.2 Beta 1 and HCT 9.3 Beta 1 Web Updates are now availble for download from the Test Kits page. These Web Updates should be installed on systems that already have HCT 9.0 or 9.1 installed:
- The HCT 9.2 Beta 1 Web Update should be installed on systems with HCT 9.0 installed.
- The HCT 9.3 Beta 1 Web Update should be installed on systems with HCT 9.1 installed.
These Web Updates includes improved and fixed versions of many tests. Specifically:
- ACPI Stress test fixes
- ACPI Wake on Ring and Wake on LAN have been added for Windows 2000
- Fixes to the cluster tests
- See "July 1, 1999" (below) for additional changes that apply to this Web Update
The following updates were made to the HCT documents on 7/8/1999:
- HCT Testing Errata: Items number 53 and 57 of the HCT testing errata have been updated. Item number 58 is new.
- IDE Test: This test description has been updated with instructions for enabling DMA on the test system. DMA must be enabled before this test is run.
- Full Duplex Test: This test description has additional information for troubleshooting test failures with the Volume Control application.
- System Submission Procedures: The following processors are now eligible for self-test:
- AMD Athlon up to 550MHz (single processor systems only)
- Cyrix MII up to 433
July 1, 1999
The following updates were made to the HCT documents on 7/1/1999:
- Wake on Ring/Wake on LAN: These tests are now included for Windows 2000.
- HCT Testing Errata: The HCT testing errata item number 55 for the crash 2 node test is no longer an acceptable failure, since it is fixed in the 9.2 Beta 1 web update. There is new errata item number 56 that applies to several ACPI tests. Errata Item 57 explains how the SoftEnum test cna interfere with the logo'd components test with Windows 2000.
June 28, 1999
The following updates were made to the HCT documents on 6/28/1999:
- HCT Testing Errata: The HCT testing errata has two new items for the Crash 2 Node Cluster test and the DirectSound test. Errata itams are now numbered for convenience.
- Server Test: The Test Environment and Returning Results sections of this test description have been revised.
- Logo'd Components Test: This test description has been rewritten.
